A terrific tag line sets you apart from other businesses and provides a memorable and appealing reason to choose your firm over other options. The tag line should trail your company name like a shadow everywhere – in ads, on your web site, on business cards and in on-hold telephone messages, to name a few places.

Before assessing your own tag line, warm up by looking at a category of Yellow Pages ads or flip through your local business paper. First, you’ll undoubtedly notice an epidemic of companies whose tag lines are missing in action. Rate those you do see from the viewpoint of a potential customer.

Here’s my ten-spot workout from looking at ads in BusinessWest, the twice-monthly paper covering Western Massachusetts business.

1. 5 points – honest.expert.driven

This ad featured a picture of a vintage Cadillac, compounding my confusion about what kind of business this is. 5 points does not do car repair, however. It creates custom web-based applications. So thumbs down; the business name and tag line together should make it crystal clear what the company does.

2. Charter Business – The Way Business Works

Not as misleading as #1, yet the tag line is just too vague to help the reader understand what line of business this firm is in, much less why one should select them over competitors.

3. Spa on the Green – Organic Skin Care & Body Treatments

Nicely specific. I know what they do and how they differ from other spas. If they’re not the only spa in the area featuring organic products, though, this tag line isn’t distinct enough.

4. Richard A. McCullough, Inc. – Building Homes of Distinction Since 1953

We know this is a high-end residential builder with more than 50 years of experience. The tag line could have a little pizzazz to be more appealing, but it gets a passing grade.

5. Southbridge Savings Bank – Preserving the past, building for the future. Since 1848.

Although there’s a nice ring to this one, from the customer’s point of view it’s not clear why we should care about the architectural consciousness alluded to in the tag line. Preserving whose past? Its own? Downtown Southbridge’s? Not quite on target.

6. PeoplesBank – Great relationships start here.

Oh, so if I’m looking for romance, I should get a job at PeoplesBank? Do they have a matchmaking service? This tag line too doesn’t narrow in enough on the types of images evoked.

7. Wolf & Company, P.C., Certified Public Accountants and Business Consultants – Insight and Integrity

What a sad commentary on today’s business environment, when a CPA firm feels the need to say that it has integrity. Even so, honesty and integrity are qualities that no company can ever credibly claim about itself. Only third parties can attest to an individual’s or company’s moral virtues. In addition, when you bring up integrity as an issue, you get customers thinking about complications you don’t want them to be pondering while considering hiring you.

8. Mercy Medical Center – Our mission is to heal. Our passion is to care.

Rah-rah! Mission statements should be used to rally your own troops, not to motivate customers. The people you serve don’t care about your aspirations, only about the benefits you actually deliver. So for the target market, this tag line evokes skepticism.

9. Springfield Day Nursery – Early Care and Education at its Best… Since 1883

This tag line was so startling that I looked very closely to see if I had read the date correctly. I rate this tag line highly because as a whole, it sparks curiosity. As a potential day care parent, I’d want to know more about this place and how it’s survived and updated its care for kids over such a long period of time.

10. Westbank – On your corner. In your corner.

Finally, a winner. This tag line is crisp, snazzy and persuasive. It gives me a memorable rationale for choosing this bank over competitors.

The dictionary defines Proliferation as “To increase or spread at a rapid rate”. Termites will be around forever because they have mastered proliferation. Have you mastered it in your marketing?

In your marketing and promotion it is important to get as much bang for the buck as possible – to reach masses of people. The problem is that to reach the masses is often a costly and ineffective process of advertising and marketing. So how can you reach a lot of people effectively without spending a lot of money?

Here are a few ways:

– Affiliation. Through an affiliation with a business that shares your target market, you can use a process of cross promotion. For example the natural relationship between realtors and mortgage bankers.

– The volunteer sales force. This is a process of utilizing the relationships you have with current clients and others to help you promote through the distribution of materials or the process of active referrals. To create a volunteer sales force you have to provide them with something to carry with them such as a brochure or some of your business cards. Note: this only works if people like you. Try to be the kind of person that people like and you will have great success with this one!

– Network a lot. Through the networking process, continuously remind the people you meet what is a good lead for you. They must fully understand what it is that you do. Make sure that they also fully understand how it can benefit them to refer you. Note: money (referral fees) is not always a good motivator in this method.

– Have a plan to target your market and attend functions where that market can be found in large groups. For example if your target market is the real estate pro, attend yearly conferences that cater to them.

– Be creative in your efforts to get your business noticed. Everyone has competition, it is the person or company whose name is remembered that gets the business.

No one can be everywhere at the same time. Your efforts need to be focused to get the best results and focusing on the end result can help you develop a plan to reach your goals.

The first lines of your press releases shall include:
“FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE” (or FOR RELEASE Dec 25, 2002) and “For more information, contact:” followed by your contact information.

Craft a compelling headline. The headline makes your release stand out. Keep it short, active, and descriptive. If you don’t know how, read a number of compelling headlines till you get some idea.

Hook reader with the first paragraph. A first paragraph shall summarize the five W’s: who, what, where, when and why. In fact, most readers will give up if you haven’t “hooked” them in the first few lines.

Put the most important information at the beginning. This is a tried and true rule of journalism. Never hide golden points to the end.
Don’t sell but answer questions! Making over-inflated statements is helpless to your business. Write a release that answers questions about your business, rather than piling flowery adjectives without saying why.

Don’t say it, show it. Avoid saying something is “unique” or “the best”. Instead, show how people will benefit – i.e. save time, save money, make their life easier, etc.

‘Non- biased’ source like university professor or software reviewer is very helpful.
Provide all possible contact information including mail address, telephone, fax, e-mail and web site (especially for online business).
Proofread & Proofread! Do remember to proofread your press release for typographical errors before you send them out.

End your press release with “###” (without the quotation marks) after your last lines of text. This symbol lets the editors know they have successfully received the entire release.

Submitting your website to the various online directories is an important part of any Link Popularity campaign. While your traffic from many directories may be minor or irrelevant, relevant incoming links to your website will help in your overall search engine link popularity.

Paying for your directory submission can be a waste of money. You can get just as good a result from submitting to free directories. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend you pay for what you can get free elsewhere.

The best directories to submit your site to are Search Engine Friendly directories (those that actually have your site URL listed at some point, rather than outlinks that are simply code). Some will ask for a reciprocal link, some will not. One list of non-reciprocal directories is at sdfdsvcfdscddcs.Pimp-Urlxhcb . Opinion at the moment is suggesting that non-reciprocal or one-way links are better, although any relevant link is useful. Directories that do not encode outgoing links will help your website’s Search Engine Ranking.

Deep Linking can be worth linking to other pages on your site other than your main page. Before doing this, make sure that the directory you are submitting to permits you to both submit URLs other than your home page (some only allow top level submission), and for the same site to be submitted to different categories (not all directories permit what are essentially multiple submissions of the same website). This will work especially if you have online tools or directories (such as your links page) on your site that are useful and relevant to add to other directory categories. Choose the relevant directory category for your website. Most directories will have many categories you can submit your site to. Decide on the one that is most relevant, preferably a keyword that you are aiming for high search engine ranking in, and try to submit to the same or similar category in every directory, at least for your main page. This will increase the ranking of your site relating to the keyword chosen.

Submit to different categories as long as your website is relevant to those categories. This will increase the number of incoming links to your website. Writing the title for your website is very important. Try to include a keyword you are aiming for ranking in the title, but make the use of it appropriate. Describe your website in a way that will attract visitors. The length of your description will vary from directory to directory, but most will be under 250 characters. Some will allow up to 1,000 characters, and in those cases write the most comprehensive description of your site and its features that you can. It is a good idea to write several descriptions of different lengths, say from under 50 characters for a brief overview, to around 150 characters for a fuller description, up to 250 characters for a yet more comprehensive listing, and finally a full description as previously mentioned for over 250 characters. Keep your listing pertinent to your website, insert keywords where relevant and appropriate, but do not just submit a keyword listing, as most directories will reject your submission. Save all your descriptions in a text file, and just copy & paste into the descriptions boxes when needed rather than typing the same descriptions out again and again.

Again, as with the description mentioned above, the amount of keywords you can use will vary from directory to directory. Some will not give the option, some will allow you numbers of keywords, whilst others go by numbers of characters. Make a list of all relevant keywords for your site, from most important to least, and basically keep adding keywords until either you get to the bottom of your list (unlikely unless your list is really short) or you run out allowed characters/keywords. Check what keywords your competitors are going for if you need inspiration. This can often be done by viewing the source of a web page and checking the META tags. Again, save your keywords to a text file.

Subliminal persuasion? It is simply influencing people at a level below their conscious recognition. Many people don’t even realize they are being influenced by a smile, making even that a subliminal technique. Here are two more subtle methods.

Subliminal Persuasion Using Inflection

It is easy to assume that a sentence like “I can’t promise you that price.” has only one meaning. In reality, though, inflection provides much of the actual meaning. Look at the each of the sentences below, each with a different word emphasized, and followed by the implied meaning.

I can’t promise you that price. (But maybe someone can.)

I CAN’T promise you that price. (There’s no way.)

I can’t PROMISE you that price. (But maybe you’ll get it.)

I can’t promise YOU that price. (But I can promise someone else.)

I can’t promise you THAT price. (But maybe a good price.)

I can’t promise you that PRICE. (But I can promise something.)

The meaning of our statements is determined by which words we emphasize, and it is a subtle process. If you can’t promise him that price, you can tell him “I can’t promise you that PRICE,” and he may still feel good about the situation, especially if you immediately follow with what you can promise him. You probably know what you want to say. Understanding the subtle and often subliminal power of inflection will mean you actually say it.

Subliminal Persuasion Using Their Own Words

Restate what a person has said they want, and then show them how you can give them that. We all need to have some internal consistency, so we don’t like to act against what we say. This is why, as long as you have what they need, this technique works well. For an example, we’ll suppose you are selling a prospect a vacation.

After listening to what they want, you find something that fits their needs, and then say, “If I remember right, you said you wanted a warm beach, under $2,000 for the week, and with nearby nightlife. I think we’re in luck. Both of the packages we just looked at fit your criteria, so do you like Cancun or the Bahamas better?”

It is tough for someone to say they are not interested when you just found exactly what they said they wanted, and reminded them of their words. They probably won’t even notice that you are using their exact words. They’ll just feel uncomfortable contradicting what they said, and find it easier to agree. That’s subliminal persuasion.

Recently, I monitored an interesting discussion in one of the forums about the length of headlines on sales pages. Some of the posters were in favor of longer headlines because they communicated more information and had a better chance of catching the interest of the prospect. Recently, I monitored an interesting discussion in one of the forums about the length of headlines on sales pages. Some of the posters were in favor of longer headlines because they communicated more information and had a better chance of catching the interest of the prospect. Other posters claimed that some headlines were so long that they were confusing. Some even claimed that they would take away your breath if you attempted to read them aloud. One poster thought that very long headlines often appeared to be a run-on sentence… even if it technically wasn’t.

I decided it was time to do a study. I wanted to compare headlines on profitable sales pages to headlines on unprofitable ones. I wanted to find out if there really was a difference in the length of their headlines.

To perform that study, I first had to prepare a list of profitable sites and another list of unprofitable sites. I actually already had both due to another study I had recently performed. However, many of the unprofitable sites had disappeared from the Internet. I wasn’t surprised. Why stick around if you can’t make a profit; right?

I had to settle for comparing the headlines of profitable sales pages to the average sales page. I used my list of profitable sites and counted the words and characters in each headline. I skipped any site without a headline. I then looked at sites with ads running on the major search engine for the same product or service. I randomly picked one and also counted the words and characters in it’s headline for the control or average group.

The results were surprising. The average sales page has a headline of only 10 words comprising 55 characters. The profitable sales pages had and average of 14 words and 82 characters in their headlines.

We can conclude that profitable sales pages use longer headlines than the average sales page. That isn’t so surprising.

The other finding was much more surprising. With only a handful of exceptions in thousands of data points, a length longer than 150 characters was very rare. Can we conclude that extremely long headlines aren’t profitable? No; there are other possibilities. However, we can conclude that it is exceptionally rare for profitable sales pages to use headlines longer than 150 characters. In fact, 90% of the data points fell within 131 characters.

That is my new recommendation. I intend to only use headlines that are at least 80 characters long and no longer than 131 characters and I advise the same to my clients.

This places me right in the middle of the correlation group for profitable headlines. Your headline is an important factor to consider when you are optimizing sales. I hope you consider following suit. If so, let me know if this study has improved your results. I look forward to hearing from you.

The customer service team of any retail company is typically the most stressed department of that company. Aside from dealing with internal policy limitations, they also have to face and placate irate and dissatisfied customers. Most people would assume that the most stressful job for a retail company falls squarely on the shoulders of the sales staff. Sales personnel have to deal with the pressures of facing the customers on a regular basis, as well as finding ways to work around the usual objections. However, the notion that salesmen have more stress and anxiety than anyone else in their companies is false. The harsh reality is that, most of the time, the stress and anxiety of the sales staff pales in comparison to what one other division of the company has to handle. For anyone that’s worked in that sort of job, customer service is the prime incarnation of a high stress and anxiety job.

Customer service personnel are typically expected to handle pretty much any possible complaint or problem a customer might have. While most products of a technical nature, such as computers and consumer electronics, defer technical problems to technical support, for most retail items, the customer service team ends up developing the solutions. The stress and anxiety of having to find solutions to problems that, in some cases, are no longer the company’s fault has a tendency to produce either frustrated and burned-out employees, or ones that have serious stress-related psychological issues.

A huge chunk of the work of customer service, particularly when it comes to some computer companies, is fixing problems that the inevitably overzealous sales representatives create. It isn’t entirely unusual for a sales rep to mention that a feature or item is packaged with a product when it isn’t, leaving the customer service rep to figure out a way out of the mess when the customer inevitably calls in. Explaining how this came about is a difficult task already, getting progressively harder when customers insist on getting a product they didn’t pay for. This typically happens in the sales department of some of the larger computer companies, particularly in their phone-in sales divisions.

Apart from that, customer service representatives have to deal with the countless complaints that people launch over even the slightest dissatisfaction with a product. When processing a return, they also have to face the stress and anxiety of facing the customer’s anger and disbelief over why it takes so long for their credit (assuming credit was used and not cash) to be given back. Another difficulty lies in the fact that the rep has to find an acceptable solution (and, in some instances, a concession) to the customer’s problem, but not deviate from the often strict and stringent policies of the company.

It is a common misconception that customer service personnel can make arrangements for anything and everything that a customer asks for. The simple fact is that, while they may have the power to hand out concessions and fix certain issues, the problem is that the power they have is limited. It is limited by the internal policies and procedures of the company, not to mention what arrangements and procedures that a rep at their level can make.

If you are like me, or I should say, as I once was, then you probably buy a monthly allotment of supposedly fresh leads of people who are looking to start a home business. You then sit and get your script ready and probably modify it and re-modify it and then sit with your hand on the phone drumming up the courage to pick it up and dial the first number. The fear is something most of us have to conquer and is of course the fear of rejection. There are thousands of people out there who would have been able to start and run a successful business had it not been for this fear. When you finally do work up the courage and call and are lucky enough to get in touch with a live person, they end up either being angry for being called for the 20th time today, or they want to start a business and don’t want to sacrifice the time or the money necessary to build one. This type of rejection over and over can kill the spirit of a new business builder and cause them to close up shop before they have even got started. There fortunately is a solution.

We are told that we have to sort and sift, work the numbers, look for diamonds in the rough. In the 8 years I have been in Network Marketing I have wasted time sorting and sifting, working the numbers and finding those diamonds in the rough. I have had a fair amount of success however I can not say that those I enrolled have had this type of success.
